The Caribbean island of Grenada was discovered by Columbus in 1498, but has had an indigenous population since much earlier. It became independent on February 7th, 1974 from UK. The country is twice the size of Washington, DC or slightly larger than Malta. It has a population of ninety thousand. The capital is Saint George’s.
Grenada is sometimes referred to as the spice island, since it is a significant producer of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. The island is blessed with a tropical climate, beautiful lush valleys, rainforests, streams, hot springs, mountain lakes, and great beaches. It is a popular tourist destination with a well developed infrastructure, even to the extent that some of the rainforests are threatened and some of the beaches suffers from erosion.
