A long layover at an airport is the most dreaded part of any trip. Even if the airports have added services (check our articles about Yotel and napping pods), they are still not good places to be killing time. You might already be tired and being stranded at an airport can give a feeling of homelessness which certainly is quite disturbing.
Instead of killing time at airports during layovers, you can now use it for a quick excursion, thanks to a few companies who offer special layover tours. These types of services are still at their infancy and the supply of services might be spotty. But the concept is great and using a layover tour could make the trip significantly more enjoyable and help you reach your final destination in better shape.
In an article in tomorrow’s New York Times, Michelle Higgins is pointing out a few examples of layover tour services being offered in different cities around the world. The tours might include a visit to museums, shopping, sightseeing, or even just rest in a hotel room for jetlagged travelers. For instance in Mexico City, you can enjoy massage at the spa of the premium Hotel Marquis Reforma. Buffet lunch and transportation from and to the airport is included for a total of $180. You will return back to the airport refreshed and in great shape for your next flight.
But there are of course drawbacks too. Layover tours often have to be reserved and paid for in advance. What if your flight arrives too late for the tour? Too bad, since layover tour companies usually don’t pay refunds in such situations.
