The Federated States of Micronesia became independent from having been a U.S. administered United Nations Trusteeship on November 3rd, 2006. The federation consists of four states. Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.

This exotic nation is made up of numerous small islands in the Pacific Ocean, north of the Equator and East of Indonesia. The total landmass of the country is no larger than four times the size of Washington, DC or slightly larger than Singapore. But the islands of Micronesia are spread out on an area in the Pacific Ocean that is about a quarter of the entire United States. Micronesia has a population of 108,000. The capital is Palikir.

Thanks to its remote location, Micronesia has been able to maintain its own culture and traditions. The islands have plenty of unspoiled nature, beautiful white sandy beaches, clear blue waters and reefs that offer excellent snorkeling and diving, Pohnpei has numerous waterfalls, Chuuk has beautiful lagoons, etc. This makes Micronesia an excellent Eco-Tourism destination and there have been efforts to develop Micronesia into a Heritage Eco-Tourism site.

  • Nice post on Micronesia. Both the FSM and the Republic of Palau are beautiful nations, home to warm people. For more information on the most remote and under-developed region of Micronesia, the Outer Islands of Yap, visit http://www.habele.org, a nonproft scholarship granting organization!
