At the Great Wall of China not far from Beijing, a surprising collection of villas can be found. Each villa is unique, altogether 12 Asian architects have been used to create the villas. The villas offer contemporary architecture and spectacular views of the Great Wall and the surrounding green mountains. The project was awarded a Biennale di Venezia special prize.
Most interestingly the villas can be rented by the room. Since 2005 upscale hotelier Kempinski is running them as a hotel under the name Commune by the Great Wall.
The hotel also has a lounge, a cafe, a restaurant, a spa and conference space.
Prices start at about 2,500 Renminbi or about $366 per room per night.
