CITIES OFFERING BEST VALUE IN THE WORLD

KualaLumpur

Kuala Lumpur, Buenos Aires and Mumbai offer the best values in the world for travelers according to a UBS Price Index study published by the Swiss banking giant yesterday.

This list is a highly useful tool when looking for ways of optimizing the travel budget. And the Price Index is easy to use as a comparison for Americans, since New York has been given the value 100.

So if you for instance go to Kuala Lumpur you will get 2.5 times more for your money than in New York City or more than 3.5 times more than in the world’s most expensive city Oslo, Norway (144.2).

Top 25 least expensive cities in the world:
1 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 40.5
2 Buenos Aires, Argentina 44.9
3 Mumbai, India 46.0
4 Delhi, India 51.2
5 Jakarta, Indonesia 52.4
6 Lima, Peru 53.8
7 Beijing, China 54.5
8 Shanghai, China 55.2
9 Nairobi, Kenya 56.5
10 Kiev, Ukraine 56.5
11 Manila, Philippines 57.5
12 Johannesburg, South-Africa 57.6
13 Mexico City, Mexico 60.6
14 Vilnius, Lithuania 63.3
15 Bangkok, Thailand 63.6
17 Bucharest, Romania 64.0
18 Manama, Nicaragua 64.1
19 Sofia, Bulgaria 66.3
20 Bogota, Colombia 66.5
21 Taipei, Taiwan 67.9
22 Bratislava, Slovakia 68.1
23 Santiago, Chile 69.3
24 Prague, Czech Republic 70.5
25 Riga, Latvia 71.9

It is obvious that the best values can be found in Asia and Latin America. But with the help of the list it is still possible to find relatively inexpensive cities even in Europe, like Kiev, Vilnius, Bucharest, Sofia, and even the highly popular Prague.

It is important to note that the study does not include all countries in the world. The study does for instance not cover cities in inexpensive countries like Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, and Nairobi and Johannesburg are the only African cities on the list. 71 cities around the world were included in the study. It is based on a 2006 survey which has been updated by multiplying each city’s inflation and adjusted for changes in currency values.
